Mechanical and Technical Workshop
The Mechanical and Technical workshop is located in the East building, E104, and is normally open daily from 8am-5pm. This service is normally available to unit only.
IGMM staff can contact the workshop for further details.
The workshop is well equipped with a variety of precision hand and machine tools. Health and Safety rules make the workshop area out of bounds to unauthorised staff but workshop staff can be contacted at any time.
The main function is to provide an engineering technical support to the unit consisting of four main categories:
PA testing of equipment
- All new equipment is inspected and given an electrical safety test before being released to the labs/offices and is issued with a pass label and inventory number. All faulty equipment which has been repaired is also re-tested before being released for use.
Repair of equipment
- Faulty/broken equipment is given an inspection and if possible repaired. Equipment handed in for repair must be cleaned and have a decontamination certificate before any work can commence. Specialized equipment is given an initial inspection but may require the help of specific service engineers.
Refurbishment of lab and office space
- Anything from installing shelves to modifying, altering and converting lab and office space can be tackled in house.
Construction of novel lab equipment
- The workshop has a large array of precision machine tools and highly skilled staff to construct components, modifies parts, build complete systems and assist with larger projects.
