MRC's Dr Javier CaceresIGMM Retreat:
15 October 2008





 

Over 400 staff and students from the Institute gathered together on Wednesday 15 October for IGMM's first-ever scientific retreat. Over the course of the day, delegates heard a total of 16 presentations covering every area of science within the Institute, including brain biology and disease; cancer; common diseases and genetics; and paediatrics. For the non-specialists there was a special public session with guest speakers.

 

The day was rounded off with a poster session/competition presented by Professor Nick Hastie (IGMM Director) and Dr Richard Henderson (Chairman of the Advisory Board) which was won by the MRC's Rachel Rigby - "RNase H2 in the innate immune response" (pictured below right) who is part of Dr Andrew Jackson's Research group and the other winner was Adele Thomas (Molecular Medicine Centre MMC) "Neuronal NOS knock-out mice have high bone mass and are hyper-responsive to oestrogen".

Honorary Awards, University of Edinburgh: 31 October 2008

 


The Unit is delighted to announce that David FitzPatrick has been awarded an honorary professorship from the University of Edinburgh. Andrew Jackson has also been awarded an honorary readership. David and Andrew are both group leaders in the MRC HGU and consultants in the Clinical Genetics department.

 

The strong links between the MRC HGU and the clinical services are mutually beneficial and integral to the success of the IGMM. The honorary professorship further strengthens the links with the University component of the IGMM.

 

 

Election to EMBO: 15 October 2008


An HGU scientist, Dr. Javier F. Caceres, has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Leading scientists are nominated and elected annually to become EMBO Members, recognising their proven excellence in research. As a new member, he joins the ranks of approximately 1,300 leading researchers in Europe and worldwide representing the full diversity within molecular life sciences. New EMBO Members and Associate’s Members are invited to present on their research at the 2009 EMBO Meeting to be held in Amsterdam, from August 29-1 September. Dr. Caceres lab focuses on the study of post transcriptional regulation of gene expression.
