Unit Scientists involved in Science Communication Projects: 11 January 2007

MRC HGU post doctoral scientists Marit Boot and Jean O'Donoghue have been involved in two science communication projects at Our Dynamic Earth: 'Genetic Manipulation debate 'Food for Thought' for secondary school pupils and 'Make your own model cell' for primary school pupils.

The debating event in December 2006 on genetic manipulation (GM) of crops for secondary school pupils allowed intense discussions on how natural and how safe GM food is. After a lecture, question and answer sessions, mapping the use of GM in the world exercise, and several debates, each group went off to make their own policy on GM. New knowledge for the pupils ranged from finding out that both GM tomatoes and organic tomatoes contain genes to the complex issues surrounding the public concern and environmental impact.

The 'Make your own model cell activity' in October 2006 was part of a debate on the use of stem cells organised by the Institute for Stem Cell Research in collaboration with Our Dynamic Earth. Scientists showed primary school pupils what types of cells there are and how they work, followed by the children making their cell of choice.
